| So what is DotA? My guess is accelerated action strategy. I've heard some type of RPG but that doesn't seem right. What does the community think? |

| well, DotA is actually classified as an RTS or Real-Time Strategy. but for me, I thinks its more of an RPG. |

| DotA is classified as a MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena). It can also be described with rts and rpg elements. HoN and LoL are called "DotA-Likes" because DotA was awesome enough to become its own genre |

| Why is it real time and not accelerated a day in the game doesn't really take 24 hours, or else every game at night would have a nightstalker |

well RTS doesnt actually have to coincide with "real-time". the only reason they call it a Real-time Strategy game is that it has elements of "real-time" such as weather, time table systems. and thats about it. |

| And that traditional strategy games probably weren't "real-time". As in chess, puzzles, tower defense, board games, tactics, etc |

| Since it's so hard to classify, I agree with you Avalon. Let's hereby say it's in the DotA-genre. There already exists several games in the same genre, HoN, LoL + a number of SC II-dota wannabies. |

| Dota definitely is a unique genre
i would call it the only game where both, strategy and skill are both needed A LOT. I have never seen anything like it, because games are usually strategy OR skill, for example Civilization(strategy) or Call of duty(skill). |

| Hm, but for skill you need strategy and vice-versa. So border between those 2 things is pretty thin, almost invisible. To know strategy in Civil, you need skill and experience for it, exactly what can be said for CoD. But DotA is harder than both games. |

| Well, Strategy is a skill, indeed lol. But what i mean, in a FPS you need minimum strategy and a lot of ability to aim and have fast reflexes, the few strategy would be hiding and running around, lol; in the other hand most of strategy games are with turns, which need not much more than thinking. Or Warcraft kind of game where u need some little ability to control multiple units but the game really relies on what you choose to build, where and when. Well, you get the idea
and DotA is the only game which has both in huge proportions ;)
