Some extra info on items , it's good to know which item is where and how to make it before the game starts cuz if you don't know how to make your desired item in-game you'll take far too much time browsing the shops and that will take time which you most likely won't have.

Now since you're new you'll need to learn the map layout and by viewing a few reaply you can easily learn which paths are safe and which are not.
Note that some replays show builds which are bad and not recomended if your not skilled but also note that some replays here are from very skilled players who play their role very well .

Also you must learn the hero roles:

Carry - this is a hero which is weak early game but becomes very strong late game , he is also quite item dependent
Such heroes are : Traxex , Phantom Lancer , Faceless Void , Shadow Fiend etc...

Support - this hero helps his team with his supportive type spells and by buing supportive items like Guinsoo , Mekansm , etc...
Such heroes are : Crystal Maiden , Omni Knight , Chen etc...


Nuker - this is a hero with very strog single target or AOE based instant dmg spells , these heroes dominate the early phase(laning phase) of dota which is very crutial since nukers don't need alot of items and their role is to kill the carry or support hero in a clash
Such heroes are : Zeus , Akasha , Lina , Bane Elemental etc...

Initiator - this hero begins the battle ,this hero has a skill which allows him to dissable or confuse the enemy , alot of heroes have initiating skills but that doesn't mean that they should initiate .Heroes with a great AOE dissabling presance are the true initiators
such heroes are : Earth Shaker , Magnus , Enigma , Tidehunter etc...

Ganker/Roamar - a hero who is good in killing heroes , these are mostly nukers

BabySitter - A hero who helps his carry farm his lane and get kills , support heroes fit this role best

Semi-Carry - Not only 1 hero in each side dominates late game ,these heroe that have managed to get alot of creep kills and hero kills have usually extra money for top gear items items which helped them scale as a carry

Tank - this hero tries to focus all the attention on himself , by doing this he allows his team mates to easily kill the enemy.


Pusher - These are heroes who specialise in destoying towers very fast or clearing out creep waves , they are usually heroes who can deal massive dmg as long as their enemy stays in 1 place thus making towers easy pray

Turtler- These heroes are great at defending usually because of abilites which deal AOE dmg or have some sort of protection skill which allows them to stay longer in battle and keep the enemy at bay
